Mozilla Bangladesh l10n Sprint May 2014

Mozilla Bangladesh organized a successful onsite l10n Sprint on 13 May 2014 at Hub Dhaka, Mirpur Dhaka to translate Firefox OS related strings and documents in Bangla. At the sprint 10 Mozillians gather at site and more than 5 Mozillians attended online. Mozillians complete localization and review of more than 1300 new Firefox OS strings. They translate Firefox OS related web content in Bangla which is more than 4000 words. They also review the scripts translated for Bangla voice over for Firefox OS related video content which is more than 7000 words. At the end of the sprint participants learned how to test Firefox OS through MozTrap. They committed to test Firefox OS and other incomplete tasks after the sprint from their home.

The event was so productive and successful and full of foods and fun. That was one of the best sprint I ever attended.

New Firefox Community Launch by Mozilla Bangldesh

I can remember the day 29 October back on 2009, we arranged a lunch party to celebrate Firefox 3.5 at Dhaka. That was the first event where we can manage to bring Firefox swags and distribute them to the participants. That was the day we decide we need to build and grow a community for Bangladesh to spread Firefox and words of Mozilla. And we start a Facebook page named Mozilla Bangladesh on that day. Feeling lucky that again I was again part of a launch party of Firefox 29.

It feels good when you got more than you wish. When you got lot more it deserves celebration. New Firefox (29) brings us once again that occasion to celebrate its launch with its new looks and exiting features. Mozilla Bangladesh arranged a community launch party to celebrate new Firefox launch on 9 May 2014 at Hub Dhaka, Mirpur Dhaka.

At the party around 100 participants attended including all the Reps, active Mozillians and well wishers of Mozilla and Firefox browsers. The event start with an interesting ice breaking activities conducted by community lead Mahay Alam Khan.

After that Reps Rahid, Noor, Aniruddha, Shafiul talked about different features of new Firefox and discussed about Mozilla missions and different products. The event ends with Q/A session. At last Mozillians are served with snacks and Firefox swags.

Make your city visible with MozStumbler for Mozilla location services

If you look through the screenshots I post here at this blog you can notice how Mozillians making differences  by contributing Mozilla location services. And that done in a month only.

What is Mozilla Location Service?

The Mozilla Location Service is a research project to investigate crowd sourced mapping of wireless networks (WiFi access points, cell towers, etc.) around the world. Mobile devices and desktop computers commonly use this information to figure out their location when GPS satellites are not accessible.

How to contribute at Mozilla Location Service?

You can download our “MozStumbler” client application and start mapping the wireless networks in your neighborhood. MozStumbler is an Android app that collects information about wireless networks near you and reports this information to Mozilla. As you walk or drive around town, MozStumbler listens for nearby wireless networks to periodically broadcast their network ID.

You can install the latest build of MozStumbler.

Just for fun, you can optionally enter a nickname to track the number of networks you have contributed and compare your progress to other users on our leaderboard.

Follow some easy steps

For Android devices:

• Download MozStumbler from https://github.com/mozilla/MozStumbler/releases
• Install the app to your android device. Make sure “Unknown source” allowed from Application settings.
• Run the app.
• Set a nick at the settings of the app.
• Enable GPS at your device.
• Click the “Start” button to collect data.
• To upload the data connect internet with your device.
• Upload data by click “Upload” button at “Upload observations”.

For Firefox OS devices:

• Go to  https://github.com/clochix/FxStumbler
• Download the zip and extract to a position you remember(I kept in downloads)
• Connect your device via app manager of Firefox
• create a new packaged app and when asked for source point to the extracted folder
• debug and it will be installed on your device.

Some tips for you

• Do charge every time before you run MozStumbler. Because GPS will kill your device power.
• Don’t keep enabled your data service while you are collecting data.
• Check the “Upload observatios” regular to watch you are getting the new observations.
• When you are done with an area, the observation will 0. So can stop the app when you are done with an area.
• Visit https://location.services.mozilla.com/map to see where you made the spot. Genegrally the map updated on each next day.

Mozilla Bangladesh at Ekushey Book Fair 2014

I just returned from an awesome gathering of Mozillians at Ekishey Book Fair at Dhaka, Bangladesh and writing this blog. Ekushey Book Fair is a month long yearly event organized by Bangla Academy, Bangladesh. Each day lots of people visit the fair.

This year Mozillians from Mozilla Bangladesh planned an informal meetup at the book fair to took the chance to reach a great number of visitors. At the book fair Mozillians distribute handbills among the visitors about Mozilla mission, Mozilla Bangladesh and Mozilla products. Also they show their Keon and Peak with Firefox OS to the visitors.

Firefox 27 (Aurora) Bangla (bn-BD) localization sprint

Mozilla Bangladesh is going to start an online localization sprint again. This time we all localize/translate Firefox 27 (Aurora) in Bangla (bn-BD). We already start the translations here[1]  from today and continue until we complete the 100% localization of that product.

I would like to invite you all to join the translation work and please don’t forget to spread it. Let’s show to world once again how we people love Bangla and Mozilla.

Bangla support for Firefox OS: efforts from Mozilla Bangladesh

For the last 2 months I’m feeling deep pleasure and satisfaction as a result of Mozilla Bangladesh’s achievements on Bangla support for FirefoxOS. Awesome mozillians of our community have been working from the beginning of this year and made a successful 2013. And November being the crown jewel of the year.

November 7th is not only a memorable day for Mozilla Bangladesh, but also for the greater region of Indian subcontinent. On this day, indic font was added to Firefox OS and ensured perfect rendering of several languages of Indic family. I want to dare to ask, “Dear Indic speakers, you owe us, you owe Ani.” Our pride Aniruddha who had submitted the bug to include indic font into B2G and requested to pull with a patch ready. Hell yea, he is an One man army.

In this November Mozilla Bangladesh complete 100% Bangla (Bengali) localization of Firefox OS 1.2. And they complete that by localizing 8700+ words in only 10 days. Now we are not far away from getting Bangla Firefox OS.

Today, 26th November, 2013 marks the day of victory for Mozilla Bangladesh! We earned our place for our beloved language in the Gaia Keyboard app! Avro Phonetic and Probhat are now officially a part of Firefox OS, and Firefox OS is the first mobile operating system to be shipped with Bangla Input Methods by default!

I would like to add more at “in November” list:

-Mozilla Bangladesh Facebook group crossed 2000 members milestone.
-Mozilla Bangladesh site got functioning after few months of pause.

This is really an excellent example of community efforts to make success of a dream. We are going to have our first ever Bangla smartphone so soon! WOW!! That’s why I love this community.

We did it! We did it again!! We have localized a Mozilla product 100%!!!

I feel proud to be a part of history made during Firefox 3.5; when we achieved 100% Bengali localization for Firefox Browser for the first time. I was part of the localization team and also arranged a launching event, it was 2009. This year, I am lucky again. I’m lucky to be the part of the team, who finished localization of Firefox OS 1.2. Yes, we have fully Bengali (Bangladesh) localized Firefox OS 1.2. We did it! We did it again!! We have localized a Mozilla product 100%!!!

I am happy and excited to announce that awesome Mozillians from Mozilla Bangladesh has done 100% localization of Firefox OS 1.2 in our beloved language Bangla. Congratulations to all of those who joined in each steps as translation of the words, review them and submit the final. This is really a great achievement for us as community.

Localization Expert and Mozilla Rep Mahay Alam Khan AKA mak bhai made a call for the translation on 6th November at Mozilla Bangladesh Facebook group page, forecasting to complete the tasks within February 2014. Few of us stared translating before 9th November, when Ashickur Noor informed, that MAK bhai calculated, if only 15 people (1% of our MozillaBD FB gruop member) translate 10 words per day, we can finish the task before January 8th, 2014, pretty much 1 month earlier as MAK bhai asked for. Motivated by mak bhai’s Unitary method calculation to finish the FxOS 1.2 l10n, our Mozillians stormed into the translation, while 8715 of 11958 words were left for translation. And they complete the whole tasks within only 10 days. WOW! what a pace!!

I thank and congratulate each and every one who did the tasks, specially Zobayer Ahmed Khan (jaggedzak) and Tapu Afrad (tapuafrad) did magnificent jobs. Zobayer did 766 suggestions, 1633 reviews and 831 submissions. Tapu did 731 suggestions and 371 submissions. Mozilla Bangladesh planning to build the Bangla localized Firefox OS locally for test purpose. Also localization team moving forwards to translate next release of Firefox browser.

MozCoffee with awesome Mozillians from Mozilla Bangladesh

MozCoffee Dhaka is my first event as an organiser and as a Mozilla Rep, though I involved with local Mozilla community since 2006. So this event is very special for me. According to plan MozCoffee Dhaka has been held on 1st November 2013 at FREPD Auditorium, Dhaka University, Dhaka. Though the event was timed at 4:00PM but most of the enthusiasts Mozillians reached before that with their friends.

At the MozCoffee there present most of the Mozilla Reps from Bangladesh, two RMAs of this region, around fifteen new and old FSAs from different Universities and Firefox clubs and around ten new comers who are interested to be Mozilla contributors. But we missed so much our Rep Ashickur Rahman Noor and Mozillian Robin Mehdee due to they are out of country right now.

We start with an introductory session where everyone introduce him/herself to the rest of the audiences. Then Rep Mahay Alam Khan introduce two newly selected Reps me (Belayet Hossain) and Tanha Islam from Bangladesh to the community. He also introduce new RMAs Tanha and Arif Nezami. Mozillian Anam Ahmed introduce some new FSAs to the community.

After that Rep Mahay Alam Khan, Mashkawat Ahsan, Shafiul Azam Chowdhury, Rahid Hasan, Md Enzam Hossain and Mozillian Askary Rahman who attended the Mozilla Summit 2013 at Santa Clara start their experience sharing session. They talked about their experiences at Santa Clara like how they reached there, how they feel about a place out of their country, how they meet people at the Summit and different sessions at Summit and lot more things.  They also talked about history of Mozilla, its mission, different Mozilla products and projects. They try to emphasize why we need localization and how development is important for us. Tanha and Nezami talked about the FSA and RMA but personally I think community still confused about these parallel community engagement projects. Enzam, Shafiul, Rahid and Ahsan talked about some of future events which are focused on MDN localization, Apps training etc. Rep Aniruddha Adhikary talked about upcoming features of Mozilla Bangladesh web portal (mozillabd.org). At the end of the sessions, I thanked all to join the event and thanked to Rasel Khan who help me to arrange this awesome event.

Participants enjoyed the Coffee, tea, snacks and candy very much during the whole event. I distributed the Mozilla swags among the new and old Mozillians. They loved the Thunderbird stickers but they expecting some t-shirts for them.

Mahay Alam Khan distributed some of his goodies to encourage participants to be interactive during the event. We end the event by taking a nice group photos but participants enjoyed a lot and have fun when taking individual pictures with the Firefox logo.

I did a post event evaluation of event by arranging an online survey to collect feedbacks from the participants. The summary of the data says that around 76% participants think that the agenda of the event is interesting and important to them. Around 90% of the participants think the speakers are good and friendly. Good feedbacks on event location and timing. Participants liked the venue and its facilities. Around 80% participants think the event was a success.
